Technological quantum leap for Behringer: HBM400SC breaks new ground
The Speed Cutting technology in the HBM400SC revolutionizes band sawing
Behringer is heralding a major turning point in the field of high-performance band sawing. In terms of cutting output, downtimes and speed, the revolutionary new Speed-Cutting concept used for the first time in the HBM400SC leaves existing band sawing technology well and truly in the dust. This revolutionary new system is the symbiosis of innovative machine technology and newly developed tools.
The HBM400SC is an automatic high-performance band saw whose enormous cutting output makes it ideally suited for the economical, precise cutting of different solid metal materials. It is capable of whipping through high piece numbers at impressive speed, and its cutting range of 400 mm in round and 400 x 400 mm in flat material make it extremely flexible in application. To make full use of the enormous potential offered by SC technology, stringent demands were made on the machine concept, in particular the degree of automation. Behringer supplies individually tailored one-stop solutions such as fully automatic infeed and discharge devices, roller conveyors and transverse conveying systems, as well as the facility to link the HBM400SC up to different storage systems. The company’s own plant engineering department is capable of configuring the ideal periphery for any individual customer requirement. All the components contained in the plant can be integrated in the control system, giving the term Speed Cutting a significance above and beyond the actual sawing process itself. Revolutionary Speed Cutting technology is breaking exciting new ground: Four times the cutting output: Compared to today’s band sawing technology, the HBM400SC offers an extraordinary cutting output. Conventional band sawing machines fitted with a bimetal saw blade, for instance, are capable of cutting solid 16MnCr5 material with a diameter of 150 mm at a cutting output of around 80 sq.cm/min. Using a carbide-tipped blade, this can already be increased to around 130 sq.cm/min. But using the Speed Cutting technology installed in the new HBM400SC, the approximate output achieved is an amazing 500 sq.cm/min. This results in unbeatable cutting times. While a conventional band saw with bimetal saw blade takes 150 seconds to make one cut, the new HBM400SC slices through the same assignment in just 21 seconds. This means that a single machine can replace a complete sawing machine pool. Reduced saw blade thickness: A specially developed band saw blade ensures stability and extreme cutting accuracy. By cutting the thickness of the blade to just 1.1 mm, the cutting forces per tooth are reduced. This results in a narrower kerf of just 1.7 mm instead of the customary 2.3 mm. If we consider the material saved by this modification, this technology offers enormous potential for savings over conventional band sawing technology. Quiet running and high speed – not a contradiction: All the features of the new HBM400SC were consistently adjusted to the machine’s enormous performance potential. Changes included consistent further development by the Behringer engineers of the cutting pressure control system with servo feed familiar from the Behringer HBM series. This combination ensures a constant feed movement on the one hand, while at the same time the precise cutting pressure control system prevents overload of the saw blade. All major components are also made of vibration-damping cast material – a combination which takes care of quiet running during cutting operation, even at high speeds. Chip disposal optimized: Where a lot of sawing happens, there will be a lot of chips. The chips produced during high-performance sawing have to be removed from the cutting area with the utmost efficiency. An optimized chip cleaning system transports the entire produced chip volume directly and reliably into the chip conveyor located in the machine bed. The conveyor is also dimensioned for substantially higher chip volumes. Extension of a successful series – The new HBM540A
With the HBM540A, Behringer has extended its fully enclosed, flexible band saw series.
Based on its only recently fully re-engineered automatic HBM440A, Behringer is now presenting an addition to this high-performance machine series. The new model addresses the most stringent requirements in terms of its appealing modern design and also of its superbly engineered functional characteristics. The new band saw is ideally suited for the economical and precision cutting of a wide ranging variety of solid materials, pipes or profiles made of metal. In a cutting range of 540 mm in round material and 630 x 540 for squares, the HBM540A saws effortlessly and at high speed and can be used with either bimetal or carbide saw blades.
The consistently modular structure of the new HBM540A guarantees a permanently high standard of quality in all the components as the sawing unit, material clamping unit and feed unit are pre-assembled separately as part of a flow assembly sequence. An interesting new feature of this machine, for example, is the facility to tilt the saw frame towards the operator, which considerably simplifies saw blade changeover. And an additional benefit for all those needing to saw an increasing amount of square or sectional material: The modular structure of the machine permits considerably simpler implementation of a saw blade incline up to 4° for the manufacturer. The machine designers attached particular importance to reducing not only cutting times but also cycle times. The result of these and other improvements are higher quality cutting results in a substantially shorter time. The feed gripper ensures trouble-free transportation of the material to be cut, even when working with uneven stock, bundled material or heavy forgings, as the fixed gripper jaw is also moved by the material on the return stroke of the feed carriage. The material is always ideally clamped, as the clamping jaws are able to move in accordance with the material width. A standard feed gripper length of 500 mm is provided, although this can be optionally extended to 1500 and 3000 mm. The feed gripper can be moved close up to the saw blade, allowing cut off lengths to be reduced by around 50 per cent. The gripper is mounted on linear guides and positioned by means of a frequency-controlled drive system. A vertical clamping unit can be optionally mounted. This is mounted in front of the gripper jaws and covers the entire cutting area. This offers a particular benefit when sawing layers or bundles. The machine is equipped with generously dimensioned hinged doors which afford simple access for cleaning or maintenance work. This represents a particular benefit when changing the saw blade. The sawing unit of the new HBM540A is also manufactured from a single cast frame, meaning that the machine is extremely torsion resistant even under the most extreme blade tensioning forces. Two self-adjusting chip brushes on either side of the saw blade clean it of adhering chips during the machining process. The overall machine concept of the new HBM540A was designed for trouble-free carbide capability, meaning that not only the drive system but all the relevant components have been adjusted for the use of carbide blades. Carbide saw blades offer an interesting alternative to bimetal, in particular when considering the time factor as part of the sawing process. The cutting output is many times higher, which makes a major difference to the machining times. The higher chip volume produced when working with carbide saw blades is directed into a generously dimensioned chip conveyor. A self-explanatory, graphic-supported control system paves the way for convenient and at the same time easily understandable sawing machine operation.
