Steel strapping Sometimes simply better.
Steel strapping is the classic method of securing loads – and despite the numerous advantages of plastic strap it is sometimes the better solution, even today. For example, when strapping very heavy loads or if the items have particularly sharp edges which might possibly damage a plastic strap.
Consequently, the question of 'plastic or steel' cannot be answered in general terms but only with careful examination of the applications in operations.
In the case of loads where circumference tends to decrease steel straps are not to be recommended though: Owing to their low elasticity they are unable to restore their original length – tensioning force declines considerably or even disappears completely.
Cyklop supplies steel straps in widths from 9 to 32 mm, plus a comprehensive range of strapping devices: From the simple manual tensioning tool to the convenient automatic strapping machine nothing is left to be desired in terms of customers' requirements.

Steel strapping > Machines > AF/AP 111 The AF / AP 111 M series
Operation:
The load is conveyed to the required strapping position. The automatic strapping process is started. The strap is guided round in the strap guide and stretched round the load at an optimised tension, then sealed and cut off. The procedure is repeated for each load, depending on the number of strapping cycles. The strapping head is located on top of the package.
AF/AP 111 MVB
Only the strapping head is lowered to the package height. The difference in height between the highest and the lowest load can be a maximum of 550 mm.
AF/AP 111 MKB
Not just the strapping head lowers onto the pallet load but the entire upper strap guide frame. Strapping can be performed even if pallet height is only 300 mm or less.
Main advantages:
• Compact, minimal space required
• Easy access to all mechanical components,
to facilitate service and maintenance
• Fast and economical to manufacture
• High strap tension, up to 7 KN
• Modular adaptation to type and size of package
• Strapping head service-friendly
• Easy to integrate into existing conveyor lines. Adjustable in height
• No need for a base. Minimal space required.
• Fully electric, 3-ph. + N or electric/hydraulic
• All the machine functions are electronically program controlled, with plain text display
• The modules are manufactured in series, each to the same specifications and with the
same precision
• The results are high reliability and minimised servicing

CHRONO-PAL™ PL 150 SB The CHRONO-PAL™ PL 150 SB high level automatic palletizer is designed to stack 1 kg bags at speeds of up to 9,000 bags per hour. It fulfils the demands of modern bagging plants and the high performance of this palletizer is achieved through the use of dual feeding belt conveyors. Each layer is formed on the layer table in such a way that the upper fold always points towards the middle, thereby ensuring a smooth outside of the pallet. Even if one bag loses product, the contents remain in the centre of the filled pallet and - as a result - the outside remains clean. Another special feature of this palletizing system is the fact that an interlayer is not used as with common palletizers of this type to stabilise the filled pallet. The output pallet can thus be placed directly at the point of sale.

Air separation unit Air separation plants
From our general experience, we know that the basic components constituting the ambient atmosphere are oxygen (21%), and nitrogen (78%).
GRASYS Air Separation Units are provided to disengage each one of these components with the scheduled purity at the output. When it comes to the air separation process it is worth talking of the two major ends of this method, namely:
- the production of gaseous nitrogen
- the production of gaseous oxygen.

Carbon dioxide purifier Hydrocarbon plants
GRASYS hydrocarbon separation plants are produced with the use of the company brand-new proprietary membrane capable of delivering substantial benefits in comparison with other gas separation technologies.
Due to their cost-effectiveness combined with required longevity GRASYS membranes may be efficiently used in industrial applications where operating conditions excludes the adoption of other polymer membrane types. Besides, this membrane gas separation technology has a modular structure allowing expansion or modification of operated systems and prompt response to any changes in feed composition during the entire life cycle of a given source (e.g. increasing CO2 concentration or changing hydrocarbon flow composition in a natural gas field) — and all this without unnecessary additional costs. The description below features some of the primary applications of GRASYS gas separation systems

Craftsman cube range stretches across the globe Collection complements ‘Crafticube’ system
With a client list spanning the globe and taking in major players such as Boeing, Hyde Aerospace, BNFL and BOC Edwards, Craftsman Tools forms an impressive success story.
Within its workholding range, Craftsman is able to offer a complete series of cubes, either from its plain-faced standard stock, or via bespoke designs to meet exact process requirements.
Each cube allows the loading of a horizontal machining centre pallet with the maximum number of components, helping maximise the productivity of both single and twin pallet machines.
The plain-faced type mounts directly to a standard machine pallet so its faces are ready to take fixturing items. The faces are supplied finish machined, perpendicular to the integral base and edge locations, while “parallelism” is also assured.
These can also be used to apply the “Crafticube” system, which gives incredible flexibility in the application of fixtures to horizontal machining centres. At its heart is the cube; a top quality hollow casting, stress relieved and precision machined.
Its strong construction and integral base ensures dimensional stability and a capacity for arduous work. Two precise dowels on each face guarantee permanent datums and interchangeability of fixture plates.
Other members of the cube family, including hollow tee brackets, triforms and angle brackets, can also accept fixture plates by applying the same principles. These are ideal for the mounting of a series of vice units and other modular arrangements.
US engine manufacturer Dresser Waukesha, which is based near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been a client of Craftsman Tools for several years.
They are worldwide leaders in the design, manufacture and marketing of highly engineered equipment and services sold primarily to customers in the flow control, measurement systems, and compression and power systems segments of the energy industry.
Robert Johnson, said: “Dresser Waukesha is in the process replacing its entire manufacturing stock, and this is being carried out as it improves or launches new products.
“As with the aerospace contract, Craftsman was chosen because of the stability and accuracy of our cube holding.
“We’ve worked with Dresser Waukesha intensively over the past three years to put together a product that best suited their needs.
“Our representatives in the US met their chief buyer not too long back who paid us the ultimate compliment by stating that the company will not go anywhere else for its cube systems.
“With so many years experience in the design and manufacture of prismatic workholding systems, we have developed the highest level of expertise in this very important product.
“Our standard range is available on very short delivery, while at the same time we have proved that we can design and manufacture bespoke items to suit any industrial sector.”

Craftsman Tools' Rebranding Marketing information consolidated into three areas.
Craftsman Tools has unveiled a rebranding exercise as it looks to strengthen its position in the marketplace.
The project has been driven forward by marketing executive Claudine Dusseau, who hails from France.
Soon after joining the business earlier in the year she was tasked with updating Craftsman’s sales brochures, which eventually brought about the rebranding.
The company now has newly-designed logo, strapline – “Collaborating with the World’s Finest” – and a series of sales brochures.
Claudine Dusseau said: “When I began looking at the existing brochures, what became apparent was that although the company has essentially three arms to it – toolholding, workholding and subcontract machining – there was an array of literature covering each area.
“Coming from outside the engineering industry, my first impression of sales brochures, not only at Craftsman but across the sector, was that they were very ‘conservative’.
“During the summer we had an intern working with us called Mike Urwin, a mechanical engineering student at the University of Leeds, who helped us with the initial concepts before we got in touch with a nearby marketing communications company, Phase 1.
Robert Healey, account director at Phase 1, said: “Craftsman Tools approached us with a very thorough briefing document for us to work from.
“One main aspect was that we could not tamper with the existing corporate logo too much. We kept the ‘mandrel’ insignia – because we didn’t want it to appear that the Craftsman brand had disappeared, then we added a silver ‘C’ around that and adopted new colours.
“Craftsman works with some major blue chip companies, and this helped us greatly coming up with the strapline ‘“Collaborating with the World’s Finest’.
“We also stylised the brochures by splitting them into the company’s three core areas; to help send out the message that Craftsman Tools is a major player.
“The exercise was also mirrored for its USA sister company Chevin Tools, and this was officially unveiled at the IMTS event in Chicago.”
Robert Johnson, Craftsman Tools managing director, said: “The rebrand has come at a really exciting time for us as we look to expand into other sectors and geographical areas.
“A correctly though out rebrand, regardless of the company or sector, instills pride in the business, and ours has helped us redefine our position in the marketplace, as well as giving us renewed focus to help take the business forward.”

Connecting Rod Fracturing & Assembly The traditional method of manufacturing connecting rods calls for machining the crankshaft and pin bore holes in the connecting rod, and then separating the rod and cap to facilitate installation on the crankshaft. This was a difficult operation requiring extremely high-precision machining to mate surfaces of the rod and cap.
The fracturing process pioneered by MAG Powertrain eliminates the complex machining required to achieve precision mating of the cap and rod. Instead, the cap is separated from the rod at a precisely predetermined position by fracturing. The separated faces remain unmachined, their rough surface finish ensuring perfect mating during subsequent connecting rod assembly. The degree of mating accuracy far exceeds that achieved using conventional techniques.
This technique:
Significantly reduces production costs
Minimizes connecting rod production floorspace
Reduces tooling, energy and repair costs
Is being continuously further developed by MAG Powertrain also for other products
Increases the strength of the connecting rod & cap joint.
|
Machining Centers Agile manufacturing systems are characterized by high equipment availability with parallel production processes and also high workpiece flexibility. Agile manufacturing systems are combined out of following variations STAR 500 and XS 211, the SPECHT series and the XHC series - linear motor driven machines.
|
MAG Powertrain: Market leader in dry machining In each production process, there are processing strategies that can be optimized. Especially here, valuable production time can be reduced and the piece costs can be lowered considerably. For this reason, MAG Powertrain is continuously working on new technologies to reduce or optimize processing times and quality. One example is the minimal lubrication technology. MAG Powertrain designed a new technology for minimal lubrication where the amount of the air-oil mixture can be reduced to a minimum. The air and the oil are sent directly through the spindle to exactly where the lubrication is needed. This drastically reduces the costs for lubricants.
Consumption of procedure-specific production materials
Practical example: 10 HSC centers in 3-shift mode (yearly consumption)
Wet machining
Dry machining
750,000 litres of water
500 litres of minimum quantity lubrication
30,000 litres of coolant
150,000 m³ compressed air
1,000 litres of chemical additives

Multiple Technologies This machine convinces by its vertical design and the work piece located on top, high technological flexibility, a multiple spindle design and an innovative drive concept. All axes are directly driven and, for the first time, linear motors, which have a considerable influence on the machine dynamics, are used for the X-axes for this machine series. The use of the patented triangular X-slide allows completely independent or parallel machining on smallest spaces.
|
Special Purpose Machines Basically, MAG Powertrain is capable of building special equipment to meet any required scope of processing. Beyond this, we can call on special equipment series with which many processing requirements can already be met.
|
The XHC Machining Center Drive Concept Use of linear motors results in:
High levels of machining accuracy
High speeds and acceleration reduce idle times
Minimize operational wear and tear for better reliability
The following limiting conditions apply with respect to numerous machining tasks in high-speed technology:
Cutting time is 30 to 50% of machine cycle time
Idle time is 50 to 70% of machine cycle time
Therefore the cutting times as well as the idle times - consisting of chip-to-chip-time and positioning times - have to be reduced. The MAG Powertrain solution:
Shortest possible cutting times due to high spindle performance and rotational acceleration
Shortest possible idle times due to highly dynamic rapid speed
Rapid speed rates: up to 120 m/min
Axis acceleration: up to 1.4 g
Broken tool detection while machine is cycling
Shortest chip-to-chip-time (2.6 s)
The MAG Powertrain philosophy of high-speed machining includes accomplishing shorter machining times with high levels of machine availability. This requires the use of machine components resistant to wear and tear:
Use of a gearless B-axis
Use of linear motors in lieu of ball screws
The use of linear motors means that conventional transfer elements, such as ball screws, transmissions or clutches, are no longer required. Intelligent, digital drive control units offer the following advantages:
High acceleration capability with high contour and positioning accuracy as no mechanical transfer elements are needed
High contour accuracy with high path speed due to sensitive interpolation and traction-error-free internal drive position regulation with cycle times of <0.5 ms
Since the drive contains no mechanical transfer components, machining can be done completely without backlash
High degree of speed with control and accuracy
High degree of load rigidity
Maintenance free operation as a result of the absence of components affected by wear
a Sensor built into the motor coils in the drive control unit monitors temperature and prevents overload damage
High resistance to crashes
Low force ripples improve surface finish

Schmitz Cargobull AG [2005]
The system consists of 1 chain conveyor, 1 lifters, 1 diagnostic station, 1 maintenance station and 10 carriers. The automatic assembly line starts in the preassembling department, where the different trailer chassis are lifted up to the chain conveyor at level 2. The buffer function of the chain conveyor synchronizes the cycle of the assembly line. The preassembled chassis is taken up by a passing carrier and via a lifter transported to the different assembly areas. The working height, as the rate of speed, is adjusted automatically to the different working areas. At the end of the assembly line an additional lifter takes up the empty carrier to level 2 where before starting a new cycle, a complete automatic function control is executed in the diagnostic station. Essential system data: 1 chain conveyor, 3 lifters, 1 diagnostic station, 1 traversing carriage and 10 carriers (capacity 6000 kg, lifting height ca. 2400 mm). The length of a two-level bi-rail system, CTI Patented track, comes to 400 m. Management System and control: the generation and coordination of the process flow is executed by a master PLC which transfers the fully adjustable parameters to the local carrier PLC at the beginning of a cycle. The design of the carriers and the whole system was executed under the rule, that work below suspended load is permitted.

Benteler [2005]
The system consists of 2 double girder cranes, 1 handling station and 5 crossbeams. Benteler Steel/Tube Ltd. carries out the pickle of tubes in the Paderborn/Germany located plant. To update the standard of used equipment and safe the work quality in future, CTI delivered in 2005 a semi-automatic system for pickle tube bundles. The cranes have to transfer the tube bundles to the handling station. The automatic hook mounted crossbeam pick up the bundles by hand of the operator. The operator works with the crane up to a special position compared to the handling station. This position is checked by limit switches. Now the automatic process can start. The two lift carriers into transfer point and advance the boom to the pick up lug on the beam. The crane hoist moves and lays down the beam. The automatic hooks decouple. The crane can go away and the handling station starts the pickling program. Hand over back to the crane runs in reverse order.

Shuttle systems
The system consists of approx. 160 m of new patented track and corresponding powerbars, 7 switches and a monorail control station. In 2004, CTI SYSTEMS realized an extension of an existing CTI monorail system, operational already for about 30 years at Corus’ Scunthorpe (UK) facility, in order to allow for direct automatic connection to the newly installed automated CTI warehouse and in order to adapt to various other modifications executed at the same time by Corus. The approximately 100 C-hook conveyors traveling on the monorail are transporting steel rod coils with a weight of up to 2.2 t, a diameter of up to 1,3 m and a length of up to 1.7 m. They pick up the coils individually at the wire rod mill and via the large monorail system, including some 40+ switches, they pass along compactors, cooling tracks, weighing stations, labeling stations, ... directly to the input area of the new automated warehouse. Here the coils arrive with a temperature of still up to 400°C and at a rate of 106 coils/h. Prior to being unloaded onto conveyors leading into the warehouse, a check of each individual coil is made by the new CTI monorail control station, realized at the same time than the connection to the warehouse, in order to exclude any entry of an unsuitable coil into the warehouse.

Teleplatforms The system consists of 16 painting platforms and 20 double girder under-slung cranes. The painting facilities in Hamburg for the new A380 include a CTI teleplatform system. The system consists of 4 teleplatforms with a lift height of 23.5 meters to access the fin, 12 teleplatforms with a lift height of 11.5 meters to access the upper surface of fuselage and wings and 20 double girder under-slung cranes which are installed in two identical halls. The system additionally includes cross-over systems which allow the transfer of the fuselage teleplatforms between the fuselage and wing cranes. The max load per teleplatform is 4 people plus additional load of 280kg. The proven square mast system could be optimized in terms of proper weight and stiffness. The safety of the operator is guaranteed with a selection of systems which include among others fall protection systems, evacuation system and respiratory air treatment on platform level. CTI Systems S.A. included as first manufacturer worldwide the newly developed relative motion control system in reference to the actual platform position. The platform motion direction follows the pre-selected joystick direction from the operator. This new system reduces due to its simple use the risk of operating errors.

Renewable energies Biomass consists to a large extent of carbon. Carbon is formed by photosynthesis from atmospheric carbon dioxide and is incorporated in the biomass. The increased use of such biomass within a sustainable agriculture, forest and waste management scheme is one of today's most important eco-political targets.
Reduction of combustion of fossile fuels has the highest priority. Increased use of biomass largely contributes to climatic protection and to the sustainable development of rural areas. Renewable energies become more and more important which, in our area, are mainly wood, energy crops and biowaste.
CTU is world-wide licensee of the KOMPOGAS technology for production of biogas from biowastes and energy crops.
CTU builds wood gasification plants in cooperation with PYROFORCE who are the supplier of the gasifyer.
