Metso Corporation was created as the result of a merger between Valmet and Rauma in 1999. Metso Paper was formed by merging Valmet Corporation's paper technology and Sunds Defibrator's fiber technology operations.
In 2000, Metso Paper acquired Beloit's roll cover division and paper machine aftermarket business assets, as well as related paper machine technology, such as Beloit's paper machine drawings, patents and several pilot machines.
In 2001-02, Metso Paper became the sole owner of Valmet-Raisio (later Metso PaperChem), which specializes in chemical and water management systems for the pulp and paper industry, and Scandinavian Mill Service (later Metso Mill Service), which specializes in paper industry service and maintenance operations.
In 2002, Metso's Panelboard business was transferred from Metso Paper to the Metso Ventures business area. In January 2004, Metso Paper's Converting business was sold to Bobst S.A. of Switzerland.
On 1 January 2005, Metso PaperChem Oy was merged with its parent company Metso Paper, Inc.
As of beginning of 2007, Aker Kvaerner Pulping and Power were acquired in order to make Metso Paper an even stronger player in pulp and paper industry. With this new part Metso Paper introduced a new business line: Power generation.
As of February 1, 2008, the ownership of certain Metso Panelboard's operations (panelboard business in Nastola, Finland, and part of the MDF business in Sundsvall, Sweden) have been transferred to Dieffenbacher GmbH + Co. KG, Germany. The refiner-related operations in Sundsvall, Sweden, will remain in Metso’s ownership.
In 2008, Metso Paper acquired Mitsubishi Heavy Industry's (MHI) paper making technology and became the sole owner of Beloit’s paper machinery intellectual property.
Today, the company really is a full scope supplier with practically all processes and technology the pulp and paper industry needs.
