Early History
Rubbermaid was formed in 1920 as the Wooster Rubber Company, a maker of toy balloons. In 1934, the company pioneered the rubber housewares business with the introduction of the first rubber dustpan.
1950’s
In 1955, the company produced its first plastic product; a dishpan. This product launched the Wooster Rubber Company into the housewares business. In the 1950’s, the Wooster Rubber Company also developed a “breakthrough” product for the hotel industry--a safety bath mat with suction cups on the bottom. This deceptively simple product presented a huge technical challenge and involved a complicated three-layer mold. For Rubbermaid, it escalated the company’s development and ultimately helped lead to the establishment of Rubbermaid Commercial Products.
In 1957, the Wooster Rubber Company changed its corporate name to Rubbermaid Inc. to further capitalize on the strength of its major brand; a brand that had become nationally recognized for quality and value.
1960’s – Today
Rubbermaid Commercial Products (RCP), headquartered in Winchester, Virginia, was established in 1968 to manufacture and market products for the commercial and institutional markets.
Throughout its almost 40 year history, RCP demonstrated leadership consistent with its heritage. In the 1970’s, RCP led in the technology conversion from metal and wood to plastic and in the 1980’s, it led in the development of high performance industrial and agricultural products. 1986 also saw RCP expand into the cleaning implements business with the acquisition of Seco Industries, a leading manufacturer of floorcare products. In the 1990’s, commercial product focus turned to globalization and increasing its solution-based new product focus. 1995 saw RCP introduce a record number of new products and recorded receipt of ISO 9001 certification.
In 1999, Rubbermaid Inc. merged with the Newell Co. and formed Newell Rubbermaid Inc. Newell Rubbermaid Inc. is a global marketer of consumer and commercial products with 2003 sales of $7 billion and a powerful brand family including Sharpie®, Paper Mate®, Parker®, Waterman®, Rubbermaid®, Calphalon®, Little Tikes®, Graco®, Levolor®, BernzOmatic®, Vise-Grip®, IRWIN® and Lenox®. The company is headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., and employs over 33,000 employees worldwide.
In 2003, RCP turned its focus to healthcare and launched Rubbermaid Medical Solutions (RMS), a division of RCP. With the belief that inspired design is essential to intelligent engineering, Rubbermaid Medical Solutions first introduced the new System for eMAR Delivery. By applying the principles of engineering to the possibilities of design, RMS continues to create medical solutions that increase the capacity to care. To learn more, visit www.rubbermaidmedical.com.
