The continuing exodus of many manufacturers from the UK, as well as those from other countries with a manufacturing heritage, to the lower cost countries of Eastern Europe over the last few years has, without doubt, been a cause of great concern to many of those manufacturers’ suppliers.
As one of the UK’s leading suppliers of specialist, high performance coil handling and processing equipment to metal component manufacturers in industries such as the automotive, construction, office and shop equipment and power transmission sectors, Atkin Automation was initially one of those concerned suppliers.
“But we need not have worried” says Atkin Automation Managing Director Chris Ward. “Although a number of our traditional customers are continuing to establish new manufacturing plants in countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic, this is in fact creating increased demand for our equipment”.
“Wherever possible we have encouraged these companies to adopt a policy of replicating the production lines, and associated processes and procedures, used in their current factories. Our ability to provide customers with a turnkey service, taking responsibility for the shipment, installation and commissioning of their new production lines, then enables us to ensure that they can quickly get into volume production in one or more different countries.”
He concluded, saying, “ There is no doubt that capital equipment standardisation ensures tremendous manufacturing flexibility for a multinational manufacturer.”
Atkin Automation’s international reputation has been built over many years around its manufacture of the Atkin and BHP range of specialist, high performance coil handling and processing products and equipment. It also holds European distribution rights to the Shung Dar range of Taiwanese coil handling and processing equipment, which sits comfortably alongside the company’s traditional products. In recent years the company has supplied purpose-built automated production lines for the manufacture of a wide range of metal components

W.T. Atkin and BHP were both long established UK companies providing engineering and industrial automation solutions to a wide variety of international industries. They were owned by Robert Hyde & Son (Holdings) Limited for a number of years, but in early 2004 a change of policy by the parent company meant that these two subsidiaries were no longer compatible with its investment portfolio.
The senior management team of both the companies believed passionately in their high quality British manufactured products and, with the support of international bankers HSBC, Atkin Automation was formed to acquire the assets and intellectual property rights of both W.T. Atkin and BHP.
Today Atkin Automation is a profitable British manufacturer of production lines for industries which need to process metal strip as part of their volume production operations. The company is entirely owned by its employees, and its ethos is to provide innovative high quality products and turnkey automation solutions on time and within budget.
Since the recent expansion of the EU, Atkin Automation has worked with a growing number of companies which are establishing production facilities in Eastern Europe, building machines and production lines at its UK manufacturing facility, shipping them to site and providing a complete local installation and commissioning service.
Atkin Automation is proud to be maintaining the heritage of British engineering on a truly international basis into the twenty first century.
 | BENDERS Atkin Automation offers a wide variety of powered benders to suit all applications in various widths and configurations. From simple wipe action benders for cost effective rapid 90 degree bends via rotary action benders minimising surface marking and providing more bend capability – through to sophisticated programmable angle tangent benders, Akin Automation has a bender to suit the application. Permutations are almost endless. Normally these benders are included within a process line but can be offered as stand alone units or incorporated into existing lines.
| | BLANKING Blanking lines enable a series of set components to be blanked from continuous strip, and can either be offered as a stand alone line or combined with other processes | | ELECTRONIC ROLLFEEDS Atkin Automation servo powered roll feeds are world renowned for their performance, both in speed and accuracy. A wide range of these sophisticated units is offered to suit every application. From the RF60 range, providing a single pitch feed for material up to 2mm thick, through to the RF75 and RF100 ranges all the way up to the RF127 which will cater for widths up to 2000mm. For high speeds applications, the company offers the HSP range of servo roll feeds which will provide feeds in excess of 200spm. | | FEEDER-STRAIGHTENERS Where space is at a premium, combined feeder straighteners offer the ideal solution to many production requirements. Typically operating at 60% of the capacity of a conventional press feed line, they eliminate the need for a looping area between the straightener and the rollfeed by combining them into one unit. | | PUNCH & NOTCH A wide variety of punch and notch units are available, both in fixed and CNC positioned formats, designed for incorporation into process lines. These high speed units offer durability in demanding applications combined with exceptional positional accuracy. Due to the application possibilities, please contact our sales team for further information.
| | ROLLFORMING Atkin Automation has a great depth of experience in integrating rollformers into its continuous process lines. By selecting the most appropriate manufacturer, the company matches the rollformer to individual requirements and tailored software ensures perfect integration. | | SHEET FEEDERS For applications running from sheet metal, Atkin Automation offers a variety of sheet feeders and destackers suitable for sheets from 0.5mm to 10mm in gauge. Configuration of these feeders is highly dependant on feed speed, gauge of material and installation requirements. Please contact our sales team for further information | | STACKERS For convenience and particularly in high productivity situations, finished sheets or components need to be automatically stacked at the end of the process line. Atkin Automation offers a number of stackers to suit various applications. Please contact our sales team for further information.
